Pumping at Work

Hi Magical, Pumping Working Mom!

We know…returning to work after having a baby is a huge transition — emotionally, physically, and logistically. And if you’re pumping? That’s a whole new layer of complexity. But with the right preparation, gear, and mindset, you can make this season feel more manageable.

Here’s your no-stress, real-talk guide to pumping at work:

Things To Think About Before You Go Back:

🍼 Consider Starting a Stash:

If nursing/pumping is going well, begin incorporating one additional pump session per day around 2-3 weeks postpartum. Mornings are ideal when prolactin (the milk-making hormone) levels are highest!

Try adding a pump session in one hour after baby feeds or an hour after your first pump session of the day!

👶Prep Your Baby on the Bottle:

Consider offering baby 0.5-1oz practice bottles, even if you’re exclusively breastfeeding in the beginning. This can help reduce baby’s resistance to taking a bottle after you’ve returned.

🤓 Learn Your Pump Inside & Out:

Set it up, find the right flange size (your nipples will thank you), and practice with the settings to find what is most effective for you at removing milk.

The BabyBuddha 2.0 is lightweight, powerful, and ultra-portable — making it perfect for busy workdays. Pair traditional flanges with a hands-free pumping bra or use our Hands-Free Collection Cups to simplify sessions on the go!

👜Plan Your Setup:

Pack a bag with everything you need: ✔ Pump + parts
✔ Milk storage thermos, bottles, or bags
✔ Wipes and/or wash supplies
✔ Ice packs or chiller
✔ Hands-free bra
✔ Water + snacks (you’re working hard, don’t forget to nourish yourself, mom!)

📅 When You Return:

🗣️Communicate with Your Employer:

In the US, The PUMP Act requires that most employers provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom space for pumping. Know your rights (and don’t be afraid to speak up!).

 💬 Ask where you’ll pump
💬 Ask about storage (can you use the fridge or will you bring a cooler?)
💬 Block pumping sessions on your calendar like any other meeting

📆 Build Your Pumping Routine:

No one loves pumping. Make it more bearable by pairing it with something comforting: a warm drink, a favorite snack, a funny podcast, or baby photos. Cozy vibes = more oxytocin = better milk flow!

🍼 Keep Extras at Work: Stock a drawer with an extra set of pump parts, milk bags, snacks, breast pads, and electrolyte packets. You will forget something eventually, and future you will be so glad you planned ahead for it!

You’re doing an amazing job, truly. Pumping at work is not for the faint of heart! But if you want to do it, you can — and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
